As a team member of Empower & Shine, I get a front-row seat to the quiet ways generosity changes lives. Patty and Steve are the heart behind Empower & Shine—steadfast angels who lead with humility, love, and a deep belief in people.
The reach of their kindness is wider than you could ever imagine —and Edgar’s story is a beautiful example.
At 19, after watching his father work in landscaping for 25 years, Edgar was offered the opportunity to take over 10 landscaping accounts in the North Scottsdale area. He stepped in—reluctantly—because his confidence wasn’t where his work ethic was yet. Patty and Steve were among his very first clients with the newly launched DesertScape AZ, and every Wednesday during service they made sure Edgar and his crew felt seen: cold drinks, sweets, and Patty’s and Steve’s steady words of encouragement.
Fast-forward seven years: Edgar now has over 100 accounts and a team of four employees—including his dad. He’s a true entrepreneur who loves his community and his family, and he’s built something remarkable.

Edgar recently wrote the message below to Patty and Steve. I’m sharing his words in full, exactly as he wrote them, because it captures what Empower & Shine is truly about: when you believe in someone consistently, you help them become who they were always capable of being.
“Life has a way of surprising us - sometimes with challenges that feel too heavy to carry, and other times with people whose kindness lifts that weight. Your help came at a time when I needed it most, and it has truly changed the course of my life.
Your kindness didn’t just solve a problem in the moment; it shifted my perspective, opened new doors, and gave me the courage to step through them. Small as it may have seemed to you, it became the spark that lit a brighter path ahead.
Because of your support, I've grown stronger, more confident, and more hopeful about the future. You didn't just offer assistance, you offered understanding, encouragement, and belief in me when I struggled to believe in myself.
The improvements I see in my life today - the peace in my heart, the clarity in my mind, and the joy in my days - are all touched by the generosity you showed. I will carry this gratitude with me always, and I hope to pass forward the same kindness you've given me.
Thank you for being a turning point in my journey, from your single act of care, a garden of possibilities bloomed in my life.
Best regards, Edgar Rendon.”

This is the part of generosity we don’t always see: not the grand gestures, but the quiet, repeated ones that tell someone they matter. Patty and Steve showed up—week after week—with encouragement that didn’t ask for recognition. And Edgar’s growth is one beautiful result of that kind of love in motion.
We’re grateful for the reminders that Empower & Shine isn’t just a name—it’s a way of living.
