Self care. You may hear this term every day, as it is currently a buzz word, but there it is so important to actually put self care into practice. Especially as women, in a society where we often shoulder a disproportionate amount of the mental load, we need to ensure we are filling our own cup. Whether it is a small daily practice, like sitting down outside to drink your coffee while your kids have to entertain themselves, or something grander, like a solo vacation to a bucket list location, self care is so vital to a healthy and happy life.
I asked some of my friends, some moms and some not, how they practice self care in their lives. Remember, it looks different for everyone.
“I drink wine in the bathtub, scroll instagram and online shop.”
“I take time to get a quick workout in everyday.”
“Girls nights and date nights are a monthly staple, and sometimes I will splurge on a solo massage or resort pass for a local pool and spa.”
“Wandering around Target by myself is a true form of self care.”
“I set up an activity, or a movie for my kids while I read my book in peace!”
“I ask for help. Even if I can do it all alone, I shouldn’t have to. I budget for a weekly sitter, ask my in laws or friends to watch my kids for a couple of hours, and utilize my gym’s kids club.”
“I wanted to work again, so I got a job doing what I love- teaching exercise classes at a local gym. It’s my “me” time!”
“Sometimes my self care is as simple as getting myself a coffee or treat when I am out running errands.”
“I do one or two annual solo trips to visit my girlfriends in other states. It could be a weekend or a week, but it fills my cup so much.”
These are just some examples of what self care can look like in your daily life. And no, you do not need to be a mom, working full time, or “super busy” to deserve self care. It’s not something you earn. You deserve whatever helps elevate your mental, physical, spiritual, and emotional health.
Remember, self care is not selfish! I would love to hear some ways you practice self care in your lives. Feel free to leave a comment to inspire other women on ways to practice self care.
