Seeing What’s Often Unseen: Sexual Assault Awareness Month

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month—a time to bring attention to something far more common than most people realize, and far too often carried in silence. At Empower & Shine, we talk a lot about seeing people. Really seeing them. Not just where they are, but what they’ve been through. Because behind so many stories are experiences that were never spoken out loud. And for some, this isn’t just something we’ve heard about, it’s something we’ve seen the impact of up close.

The Reality We Don’t Always See

Sexual assault affects people of all ages, backgrounds, and communities. It doesn’t always look the way people expect, and it doesn’t always leave visible signs. Many survivors carry what happened in silence, sometimes for years. So often, survivors suffer in silence. But it doesn’t always end there. The impact can reach beyond one person, affecting families too, even when no one quite knows how to talk about it. When people feel safe, supported, and believed, healing becomes possible. And that starts with awareness.

The Part That Often Goes Unspoken

What isn’t talked about enough is how far this reaches. How something like this can change an entire family. The silence. The shame. The way everything shifts overnight. People don’t always know what to say, so they say nothing at all. And because of that, survivors and their families are often left carrying something incredibly heavy on their own.

Listening Matters

One of the most powerful things we can do is simple: listen, believe, and support. Organizations like New Life Center do this every day, creating safety, offering resources, and walking alongside survivors as they rebuild their lives. This work takes consistency, care, and compassion, and it changes lives.

Closing

This month and every month, we stand with survivors. We honor their strength. Because everyone deserves to feel safe. And everyone deserves to be seen.
