Over the past five years, I have been fortunate to travel to Uganda as part of the Empower and Shine team. Each trip has been a remarkable adventure and with that, new friendships. One of the most memorable, my connection with Charles, the reservations manager at the Protea Marriott, our home base during our travels. From our very first meeting, Charles struck me as an angelic young man, impeccably dressed and eager to accommodate our every need, no matter how tall the order. His genuine kindness and warmth were palpable, and I saw something truly special in him—something that anyone who meets him recognizes too.
Charles quickly became an integral part of our journeys to Shalom Junior Trust Academy in Nakigalala, where he effortlessly spread sunshine and positivity among the children and our team. He was also the voice of reason when I expressed I wanted to take a boda boda ride into town. A boda boda is a small moped/taxi the locals use to get around. It was a very stern “NO”. He always had our backs. As our friendship blossomed during my subsequent trips, one of the things I most looked forward to was seeing my friend Charles again. In life, we encounter individuals who profoundly touch our souls, and Charles is undoubtedly one of those rare gems. Our conversations often revolved around our contrasting lives—his in Uganda and mine in America—and a idea began to form quietly in my heart.

In a moment of spontaneity, I made an offer that some might consider crazy: I extended an invitation to Charles to come to America, not as a handout, but as a hand up. It was an opportunity for a different, potentially fruitful life, and I hoped he would consider it. To my surprise and delight, in January, I received a message from Charles that he had applied for a visa and was preparing for a trip to Nairobi to pursue this dream. A few months later, I received the news that he was approved through a lottery system and would be coming to America! My immediate thought was, “Oh crap, I need to clean out the spare bedroom!”
The day finally arrived when I picked Charles up from Sky Harbor Airport, alongside two members of Empower and Shine. After a grueling 34 hours of travel, his eyes were wide with amazement and perhaps a hint of disbelief. It has been about two months since Charles arrived, and he is adjusting well to his new life. One of my favorite moments has been our drive through the breathtaking Arizona desert—his reaction to seeing his first cactus was priceless. Additionally, a trip to Costco left him in awe, marveling at the endless samples. I think we consumed 3000 calories in 17 minutes! These simple experiences highlight the simple beauty of introducing someone to new worlds and perspectives.

As Charles settles into life with his “big sister” , two dogs, one cat, and a fish—he has embraced the chaos, copious amounts hair and joy of our household. I can only imagine what he must think of our outings, like going to the local brewery for happy hour with dogs, but his adaptability and openness have been inspiring. I look forward to showing him the diverse landscapes of our country—the majestic mountains, serene beaches, and the awe-inspiring Grand Canyon.
Today Charles is working at the JW Marriott here in Phoenix. I couldn’t more proud of him.

This journey has reinforced my belief in the power of connection and the importance of embracing opportunities to uplift others. I encourage everyone to open their hearts and take chances, to spread sunshine and joy, and empower deserving individuals. The rewards of such acts are immeasurable. For me, the greatest gift has been the joy that Charles brings to everyone he meets. He is a true blessing in my life, reminding me of the beauty of friendship, the strength of the human spirit, and the transformative impact of kindness.
In a world that often feels divided, our experiences together serve as a testament to the potential that exists when we reach out across borders, cultures, and backgrounds. Charles has not only enriched my life; he has also become a beacon of hope and positivity for those around him. Through our shared journey, we are both learning, growing, and, most importantly, shining a little brighter together.
